Lump as big as a ‘bowling ball’ on a man’s nape was cut open, what comes out was scary

This viral story of how a man, with a tumor as big as a ‘bowling ball’ on the back of his neck and survives his surgery, is currently making its rounds on the internet.

According to the health article published by Hefty Website, Dr. Sandra Lee, the medical expert who checked on the man’s tumor, claimed that she hasn’t witnessed anything like in her entire career as a dermatologist. But just recently, she was greatly shocked by what she encountered with a man who has a bowling ball-sized ‘tumor’ in his nape. It turned out to be a fatty tumor and the medical doctor decided to do it using her scalpel.

According to the doctor, the said fatty tumor is a lipoma. But what is this tumor like? Lipoma is a slow-growing, fatty lump that’s commonly situated between your skin and the underlying muscle layer. A lipoma, which is like doughy and usually isn’t soft moves readily with slight pressure. These lipomas are usually discovered during the early 30’s and above. However, in some cases, some people have more than one lipoma. According to the Mayo Clinic, lipoma in general isn’t cancerous and is usually harmless except that it looks strange and ugly at your back. There are several factors that may increase your risk of developing this type of lump including:

  1. Being between 40 and 60 years old. Although lipomas can occur at any age, they’re most likely common in this age group.
  2. Genetics.  Lipomas tend to run in the blood.
  3. Having certain disorders. People with other disorders, including adiposis dolorosa, Cowden syndrome and Gardner’s syndrome, have an increase risk of multiple lipomas.

Treatment generally isn’t necessary, but if the lipoma bothers you, is painful or is growing, you may want to have it removed, just as what this man did.

It is also mentioned in the said article that the medical expert wasn’t able to get the fatty tumor in her first attempt and had to remove it piece by piece with her bare hands. The surgery lasted an intense 45 minutes! But in the end, it became a successful operation. The said man has since contacted Dr. Lee to extend his gratefulness and let her know that he’s fully recovered. What a wonderful experience for the both of them!
